This announcement has been reannouced to 5:00 p.m. May 13, 2013.  Please note this position is located in Craig, and that you will need to travel to Craig to take the initial exams on the week of May 13, 2013 or May 20, 2013.  Craig is located approximately 4 hours North West of Denver.

This announcement will be used to create an eligible list for the Craig State Patrol Regional Communication Center only.  Please only apply if you are willing to accept a work assignment in Craig.


If you have tested for this position recently, please note that you are only eligible to retest once every 12 months.  If you applied for this position in January or March 2013 you do not need to reapply at this time.

 

The primary mission of the Department of Public Safety is to provide a safe environment for the citizens of Colorado by maintaining, promoting and enhancing public safety through law enforcement, criminal investigations, fire and crime prevention, recidivism reduction and victim advocacy. The Colorado Department of Public Safety includes five divisions created by the Colorado General Assembly. The divisions are the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Division of Criminal Justice, the Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.   In addition there are three major offices within the Department. They are the Colorado School Safety Resource Center (CSSRC), Human Resource Services (HRS), and the Executive Director's Office (EDO).



The position announced below is within the Colorado State Patrol whose primary mission is to ensure a safe and secure environment in Colorado for all persons by providing professional law enforcement through responsive, courteous, caring, and dedicated service.

 

 

 Description of Job:


Communication Officers are non-sworn telecommunication specialists who provide a "life-line" to law enforcement officer's from the many different agencies for whom the CSP provides dispatch services. 

 

Communication Officers are trained to operate highly complex computers and communications equipment. They provide information and assistance to the citizens of Colorado and those visiting our state.  Communications Officers must make decisions that are critical to the outcome of emergency situations. The information that is provided by them to field personnel is necessary for appropriate enforcement actions and is often vital to officer safety.

 

Communication Officers work independently and are under continuous public scrutiny. They must deal with citizens from various socio-ethnic backgrounds, often in very stressful situations. Communications Officers must be able to empathize with others and provide a calm and professional response even when under extreme duress. Communications Officers must have keen listening skills and be able to prioritize job duties, often in an environment where multiple emergency situations occur simultaneously.

 

 Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights:

REQUIREMENTS
Must be 18 years of age, must be a Colorado resident (both military and civilian applicants), have a high school diploma or a G.E.D., type approximately 70 keystrokes per minute, be willing and able to work nights, weekends and holidays, and be able to communicate fluently in English and have a clear speaking voice.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be willing to be fingerprinted and must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, polygraph examination, and drug test.  If you have used any illegal drugs in the past five years, or have been convicted of a felony, or have a DUI, DWAI, DUID or Habitual Traffic Offender conviction within the last 3 years you will be disqualified and will not be hired. 

 

EXAM PLAN
The first step in the examination process will be two written, multiple choice exams administered for this position. The tentative date for the exam is May 13, 2013.  The exam will be administered in Craig Colorado.  Qualified applicants will receive more information about the exam date and time via email.  Make sure your spam filter allows you to receive emails from a state.co.us email address.

FLSA STATUS -
This position is entitled to overtime pay.  Applicants must be willing to accept compensatory time in lieu of overtime.
