Protecting the Lower Green River Valley
The King County Flood Control District (District) protects people, property, and communities from the harmful impacts of floods. The District wants to make sure the Lower Green River Corridor is a safe place to live, fish, work, farm, and play for generations to come.
The District is developing a Corridor Flood Hazard Management Plan to protect the Lower Green River Valley, including:
Protection Takes Planning
The District is developing a Lower Green River Corridor Flood Hazard Management Plan. The plan will guide future investments to reduce flooding.
A study called a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) is underway. This study will analyze ways to provide flood protection and meet other important objectives, including equity, habitat and salmon recovery, community, agriculture, development, water quality, and recreation.
Three alternatives are now being considered for the draft PEIS. Each alternative takes a different approach to managing flood risk. And each will describe potential impacts and ways to reduce or eliminate them.
Input is Important
Public input will help shape flood protection planning on the Lower Green River.
The District held a “scoping” period—the first step in a PEIS process—in late 2021 through February 4, 2022. During scoping, Tribes, agencies, stakeholders, and members of the public provided comments on the impacts that should be considered in the PEIS analysis and the three alternative approaches for flood hazard management.
Alternatives may be refined during winter and spring 2022 based on comments received during scoping. The District will ask for comments on the draft PEIS once it is developed.
Interactive Flood Map
This interactive flood map was developed to help users see how much
flooding would occur in the Lower Green River Valley during a 500-year flood event. (This level of flooding has 6% chance of occurring at least once during a 30-year period.)
